Re "Metro Fire works to rein in costs" (Another View, March 26): I concur with Randy Orzalli's comments regarding the significance of the cost-cutting measures implemented by Metro Fire during this horrible economic recession. These measures allowed Metro Fire to stabilize its budget and continue providing quality service to its citizens and communities.
I was a participant in the negotiations process as a financial consultant for the firefighters' union and witnessed firsthand as the Metro Fire board, management and the union contemplated various difficult scenarios, ultimately agreeing that sizable concessions were needed to maintain financial stability and mitigate the impact of the dramatic reduction in property tax revenues in recent years.
I work with other public safety unions in the region and continue to be impressed by the progressive thinking of Metro Fire, including early implementation of pension reform, and their unwavering commitment to advancing the district for the betterment of the public.
