Sacramento’s rainfall year: Not the record driest, more precipitation to come

Published: Friday, Mar. 28, 2014 - 6:45 am

Recent precipitation means Sacramento is no longer experiencing the driest yearly seasonal total on record – and more precipitation is expected Friday night and Saturday.

The year with the least amount of rain is 1975-76 when a paltry 7.25 inches fell during the rainfall year, which is measured from July 1-June 30. The rainfall total for 2013-24 now stands at 7.49 inches since July 1.

Why stop there? The National Weather Service is forecasting perhaps an inch of rain to fall Friday night and Saturday morning in Sacramento.

“We have three more storms to go so that is going to bring it up some more,” said NWS forecaster Mike Smith. “We are definitely not done for the year yet.”

A special weather statement from the NWS notes that the storm system could produce conditions and events much like those that occurred mid-week: wet roads, snow in the mountains, valley thunderstorms, hail, gusty winds – and maybe another tornado.

Potential rainfall for the Sacramento region for Friday afternoon through Saturday night:

Sacramento: 0.95 inches

Roseville: 1.03

Woodland: 0.79

Placerville: 1.26

Auburn: 1.34

Potential snowfall for the same period:

Blue Canyon: 2.6 inches

Donner Pass: 6.5 inches

Kyburz: 0.1

South Lake Tahoe: 0.6
