A man arrested in the sexual assault of a co-worker at a Subway sandwich shop this week may be connected to other assaults near the restaurant, authorities said.

Sacramento County sheriff’s detectives arrested Kenneth Chandler Anderson, 22, on four felony counts in connection with the assault on the woman as she arrived to work at the restaurant on Auburn Boulevard in Foothill Farms early Tuesday morning.

Detectives were investigating whether Anderson is connected to a series of other sexual assaults that occurred a few miles from the restaurant. Those assaults share similarities to the Subway attack, according to a sheriff’s spokeswoman.

Anderson, a longtime employee of the sandwich shop, was booked into jail on Thursday afternoon.

The motive for the Subway attack was still not known, according to a Sheriff’s Department news release.

The victim was “violently beaten” and tied up at the sandwich shop after she arrived to work around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday. The woman, who is in her early to mid-20s, told investigators she also was sexually assaulted.

She freed herself and called for help about 8:30 a.m. and was taken to a hospital.

Detectives said the suspect was wearing all black clothing, gloves and a mask. The woman “was floored” to learn Anderson is the suspect in her attack, said Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Sgt. Lisa Bowman.

Bowman said there are similarities between the Subway attack and a series of rapes in the area of I-80 and Madison Avenue. Women were assaulted at 4:20 a.m. Sept. 19; 9:15 p.m. Dec. 10; and 4:30 a.m. Jan. 8.

The attacker in those assaults was described as a clean-shaven black man 20 to 40 years old, with a shaved head or short afro-style haircut. He had a large build and wore rectangular-shaped glasses.

Anderson looks similar to artist renderings of the I-80 and Madison attacker, Bowman said.

“There are also similar acts in terms of physical violence,” she said. “In all the other assaults he also beat them. Finally, the sexual crimes are also very similar.”

Bowman said detectives are waiting to see if there is a DNA match between cases. It is unclear how long the comparison would take.

“The crime lab said they would put it on a priority,” Bowman said.

Anyone with information regarding Anderson that might be relevant to the attack can call the Sheriff’s Department at (916) 874-5070.
