Report: 49ers’ Culliver arrested after hit-and-run

Published: Friday, Mar. 28, 2014 - 7:59 pm

Chris Culliver, whom the 49ers have been eying for one of their starting cornerback spots this season, was arrested Friday on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and possession of an illegal weapon, according to a report by KTVU.

The report said Culliver was arrested after his vehicle struck a bicylist in San Jose. A witness followed Culliver’s vehicle and blocked him with his own car, at which point Culliver threatened him with brass knuckles, police said. Culliver fled again, this time striking the witness’ car, according to the report.

When San Jose police arrived, they found brass knuckles in Culliver’s vehicle.

The 49ers issued a statement that said: “The 49ers organization is aware of the recent matter involving Chris Culliver. We will remain in contact with Chris and the local authorities as we continue to gather the facts regarding this situation. As this is an ongoing legal matter, we will reserve further comment at this time.”

Culliver drew unwanted attention to the 49ers last year when he said, during Super Bowl media day, that he didn’t want gays in the team’s locker room. He tore his ACL early in training camp in July and spent the last eight months rehabilitating. He is expected to make a full recovery.

With starting cornerbacks Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown no longer on the team, Culliver was expected to fill one of those roles along with Tramaine Brock.
