One motorist died and two others were taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening after a large tree fell onto Sunrise Boulevard near Highland Avenue about noon Saturday, said Bryan Fritsch, a Citrus Heights Police Department spokesman.
The tree, possibly an oak, was one of many growing within the extra-wide median. A preliminary investigation suggests that drivers collided into the tree as it fell onto the roadway, Fritsch said. The weather was wet and rainy at the time of the collision, he said.
It appears to be split right down the middle, part going into northbound lanes, part going into the southbound lanes, Fritsch said.
The accident involved three vehicles. Fritsch said police and fire officials arrived on the scene and confirmed the fatality. The name of the victim, the driver of a sedan, name was not released pending notification of next of kin. A passenger in the sedan was injured and taken to the hospital. A northbound minivan struck a utility pole and rolled over after colliding with the tree, Fritsch said.
The roadway reopened to traffic about 7:30 p.m.
