Teachers not responsible for poor performance

Re "Teachers union fighting new plan" (Our Region, March 30): Teachers cannot teach if students don't show up for class, fail to do their homework or get suspended for unacceptable behavior.

I understand that students with English as a second language face a particular challenge, but if they apply themselves they will succeed the same as any other student that puts forth the effort.

Teachers should not be rated on students' performance because there are too many aspects of a student's performance that are beyond a teacher's control - such as parents who fail to stand tall and take responsibility for their part in their children's education.
