Kings to add Cunningham with a 10-day deal

Published: Monday, Mar. 31, 2014 - 12:00 am

The Kings will sign guard Jared Cunningham to a 10-day contract, according to a league source. Cunningham is expected to be in New Orleans for Monday’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Cunningham (6-4, 195), a Bay Area native, played at Oregon State and was the 24th overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft by Cleveland before his draft rights were traded to Dallas.

Dallas traded Cunningham to Atlanta in a draft-night deal last year as the Mavs looked to clear salary cap space. Cunningham was waived by the Hawks Feb. 22.

Cunningham has appeared in 13 NBA games over two seasons.

The move means at least for now, the Kings will not re-sign Royce White because their roster is at 15, the league maximum.

White impressed Kings coaches and front office staff, but the Kings’ need for a guard trumped signing White for the rest of the season.

The Kings only have two healthy guards, rookies Ben McLemore and Ray McCallum. Isaiah Thomas is still recovering from a right quad contusion.

Cunningham could fill in at either guard spot.
