An early morning fire first spotted by a police officer caused significant damage to a Citrus Heights home.

The Citrus Heights police officer called in the fire that was engulfing the house in the 6800 Brookhaven Way about 6 a.m. Tuesday. Arriving fire crews from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District found the house ablaze with flames shooting from the attic and fire extending into the living quarters.

Early reports indicated that people were trapped inside the house, prompting crews to search the residence. Four dogs were found and rescued but firefighters did not find any human residents of the home.

The fire was extinguished and an arson investigator was at the scene to look into the cause of the blaze, according to fire Capt. Michelle Eidam.
