Auburn police warn of scam targeting utility customers

Auburn police are warning of a scam targeting local residents and businesses, who are told by a caller that they must make a payment on their utility bill or their power will be turned off.

Police said they have received two reports of such calls in two days. About noon Monday, a downtown Auburn business received a phone call from a male caller who said he was with PG&E and that power to the business would be turned off within 30 minutes if the business did not pay an outstanding balance. The business was asked to purchase a pre-paid card and then provide the information from the card to the caller for payment, according to a Police Department news release.

About 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, a local business in Old Town Auburn received a similar call.

In both cases, police said, the calls came from an “800” number, according to the caller ID systems at the businesses.

People who receive such calls are encouraged to report them to their local law enforcement agency. Those with questions regarding their utility company or billing are advised to call the company directly for assistance and to not provide personal information to anyone over the telephone.
