Volunteers sought to assist Rocklin police, fire departments

Published: Tuesday, Apr. 1, 2014 - 9:23 pm

The Rocklin Police and Fire departments are seeking volunteers to assist in serving the public through a variety of positions.

People interested in joining the volunteer program are invited to attend an orientation meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Rocklin Police Department, 4080 Rocklin Road.

The Police Department currently has openings for volunteers in the areas of patrol, records and front counter, child safety education and code enforcement. Police Department volunteers serve as “eyes, ears and helping hands,” but do not contact, detain or arrest suspicious individuals or criminals, according to a Police Department news release. They are not sworn officers and have no powers of arrest beyond those of a private person.

The Fire Department has openings in office and front counter clerical support, fire prevention, child safety seat installation and hands-only CPR instruction, and fire support. Fire support volunteers do not fight fires, but assist firefighters at fire scenes by filling air bottles and getting units back in service.

A volunteer chaplain also is sought to assist both departments.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and of good moral character. They must have no felony or recent misdemeanor convictions, work well with others and with minimal supervision, demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making skills, and commit to serve for at least three years.

With the exception of the fire support positions, volunteers need not live in Rocklin. Those assigned to fire support must live in the city to allow timely response to fires.

The volunteer selection process includes an application, oral interview, background investigation, warrant check, Live-Scan fingerprint check and completion of a Volunteer Academy.

Application packets will be distributed at the orientation. For more information or to sign up for the orientation, call Michael Nottoli at (916) 625-5416, or email him at
