Re "A friend long gone, but never forgotten" (Dan Morain, March 30): Morain's Sunday column brought tears to my eyes. I've seen that recurring memorial notice over the years, and assumed it was written by a family member. That it was written and placed by a friend and Vietnam veteran somehow makes it even more poignant.
I'm of that generation, but managed to avoid Rocky and Gordon's fate despite 25 years in a Navy uniform. My first visit to Vietnam was last year, and the open, welcoming nature of the people I met there brought home more strongly than ever the absurdity of the war, and Rocky personifies the tragic, maddening waste.
