Fewer children in region

Published: Sunday, Apr. 6, 2014 - 12:00 am

The number of births in Sacramento County fell for the fifth consecutive year in 2012, new state health data show, leaving several communities without many children.

About 19,600 babies were born to Sacramento County mothers in 2012, down from 22,100 births in 2007.

Births also fell from 2011 to 2012 in Placer and El Dorado counties, while rising slightly in Yolo County.

Census data, at left, identify areas affected.

The trends have caused multiple schools across the region to close over the last few years, including seven schools shuttered last year in the Sacramento City Unified School District.
