Volunteers continue with cleanup at Placerville homeless camps

Published: Monday, Apr. 7, 2014 - 7:30 am

Placerville police said that the cleanup of homeless camps, which has included the collection of guns, syringes and garbage, continued on Sunday with the disposal of more trash.

About 30 volunteers turned out to pick up garbage. The effort is coordinated with assistance from mental health experts, veteran support groups and others in dealing with homeless residents of the camps, according to police.

In the past several weeks, officers have removed about 20 illegal camps along Broadway, Placerville and Ray Lawyer drives and the El Dorado Trail. About 10 homeless were offered outreach services.

During the cleanup operations, a loaded sawed-off shotgun, a rifle with a scope, more than a dozen syringes and trash scattered on hillsides were collected.
