TRUST Act improves deportation picture

Re "Deportation records belie Obama's claim" (Page A1, April 7): The report printed in The Bee affirms what immigration advocates and I have said for years: Too many contributing American residents are being deported because they did something as simple as roll through a stop sign or sell homemade tamales in the wrong place. Sometimes, no crime was committed.

What the report didn't mention was that the TRUST Act- a bill I authored- has begun to make a difference, just a few months after it became law. An Associated Press report shows that California sheriffs are no longer turning thousands of contributing Californians over for deportation. Those people should answer for their crimes, if they are proven in court, but families and communities shouldn't be torn apart for anything.

The Obama administration should take California's lead and focus on serious crime- not on boosting deportation numbers.
