Laura Lewis has been named general counsel of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District.
Lewis is a 14-year SMUD veteran who has been serving as the utility’s chief assistant general counsel. She was appointed general counsel by SMUD’s board of directors, filling the position vacated by Arlen Orchard, who recently was named SMUD’s new general manager and CEO. Orchard is taking over for John Di Stasio, who officially retires Friday.
“Laura’s experience in SMUD’s legal department, working closely with the board and with Arlen, made her the clear choice to be SMUD’s top lawyer,” said Genevieve Shiroma, president of SMUD’s board.
Lewis joined SMUD in 1997 as a staff attorney and served in that capacity through 1999. She worked as an attorney at a San Francisco law firm until 2002, when she returned to SMUD to work as a senior attorney. She became SMUD’s chief assistant general counsel in 2013.
Lewis, 42, earned her law degree from the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento.
