Re "McKinley Village proposal creates traffic fight with neighbors" (Page A1, April 3): While opponents cry foul regarding McKinley Village, there are many of us East Sacramentonians who regard the project as welcome for necessary growth and development. Similar objections were voiced regarding the expansion to Mercy Hospital, and our neighborhood is now home to a national leading heart center and convenient hospital care. That's why projects like McKinley Village, Curtis Park Village and the Downtown Rail Yards are so important.

Opponents of McKinley Village are trying to stop the project by citing supposed traffic impacts. They are demanding the developers to build an extraneous and expensive tunnel despite the fact that Sacramento's traffic studies show no need. Considering its current zoning, the land could be developed for any number of commercial uses which likely would result in far more traffic than residential housing.
