Two teens cited in fire at former elementary school in Del Paso Heights

Published: Monday, Apr. 7, 2014 - 5:22 pm

Two teenagers were issued citations in connection with a fire that caused minor damage at the sight of a former elementary school in Sacramento’s Del Paso Heights neighborhood Sunday evening.

Assistant Chief Kim Iannucci of the Sacramento Fire Department said the fire at the former North Avenue Elementary School occurred about 7 p.m. She said juveniles were reportedly playing with a lighter when brush next to a building caught on fire. She said the fire damaged the side of the building and eaves.

Neighborhood residents, who observed the juveniles, immediately reported the fire and five juveniles were detained, Iannucci said.

Zenobia Gerald, spokeswoman for the Twin Rivers Unified School District and Twin Rivers Police Department, said two teenagers were issued felony citations in connection with the fire, which is still under investigation by the Fire Department.

Gerald said the school, at 590 Morey Ave., has been closed since 2010. She said the building affected by the fire is used for storage and suffered only minor exterior damage.
