What happened in the murder case of Damon Hasick, who was killed behind the Press Tribune building in Roseville?

– Jerrod, Rocklin

Four young men were arrested in the Jan. 2, 1997 slaying of 20-year-old Damon Patrick Hasick during a marijuana transaction in a Roseville parking lot.

According to stories in The Bee, the 17-year-old triggerman, James Franklin Poland of Granite Bay, was convicted of murder in Placer County Superior Court and sentenced to 41 years to life in prison.

Two other defendants entered no-contest pleas. James Adam Ward of Rocklin, the 18-year-old wheelman, was sentenced to 26 years to life for first-degree murder and being armed with a gun, and Brian Lee Rettman of Granite Bay, 24, was sentenced to 29 years to life for first-degree murder and attempted robbery.

A fourth defendant, 18-year-old Federico Conrad Chavez of Citrus Heights, pleaded guilty to conspiracy and being an accessory after the fact. He was placed on four years probation and ordered to serve 365 days in county jail.

According to testimony, the plan had been to lure Hasick to the parking lot, where Rettman and Poland would appear from the bushes with a gun, relieve Hasick of his marijuana, then leave, meeting up with Ward and Chavez later to split the take.

The four arrived at the parking lot on Commerce Drive in Ward’s car a few minutes ahead of Hasick. Ward and Chavez remained in the car while Rettman and Poland hid. Hasick arrived with the marijuana, but when he resisted the robbery attempt, Poland panicked and shot him in the face, killing him instantly.

Poland, now 34, is at California State Prison, Corcoran. Rettman, 41, is at Valley State Prison in Chowcilla and Ward, 36, is at Chuckawalla State Prison in Blythe.
