Can you find the newspaper article on my father, Mark Contreraz? He was murdered in a drive-by shooting in March 1994.

– Alicia, San Antonio, Texas

Mark Contreraz, 38, died at UC Davis Medical Center a day after he was shot in the head, an innocent victim of a drive-by shooting.

According to stories in The Bee, the shooting occurred March 22, 1994. Contreraz was struck by a stray bullet after shoving his 13-year-old stepson inside their North Sacramento home.

The boy said he heard shots and started to go outside, but his stepfather was at the door first, shoving him back and stepping outside to see what was the trouble was. A second later, the youth said, Contreraz was lying on the ground with a bullet wound to the head.

Police said the bullet may have been intended for a teenager who was sitting by a picture window in his home at the end of Lane Drive when the shooting started. At least two bullets penetrated the window.

Witnesses told police that two teenagers in a car similar to a red Geo Storm drove to Fairfield Street and Lane Drive, a cul-de-sac. The passenger reportedly fired six or more shots from a small-caliber handgun farther down the block from Contreraz’s home.

The are no reports of arrests in the case. Police said at the time that most witnesses had been uncooperative.
