Re "State isn't prepared for college" (April 6): How can we help more students complete requirements to be eligible for admission to state universities? Research proves that experiences in visual and performing arts engage and motivate students to stay in school and fulfill university admission requirements, regardless of what career the student may pursue.
Sadly, at most Sacramento public high schools, there isn't equity of access to courses in the arts that fulfill university requirements. Epidemic shortages of art teachers allow a small percentage of students to take arts classes that fulfill state requirements, and in lower grades, most schools do not offer any arts classes that prepare students to take advantage of high school arts learning. We must ensure that all students have access to curricula that includes arts, not only to develop 21st century skills, but also to allow every student the opportunity to attend a California university should they choose.
