El Dorado sheriff says searches found no evidence of body reportedly spotted in Cascade Lake

El Dorado County sheriff’s officials say two days of searches by divers and helicopter crews have turned up no evidence of a body that a hiker reported seeing in Cascade Lake near South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday.

The hiker, who was born and raised in South Lake Tahoe, was on the trail near the shoreline on the northeast portion of Cascade Lake shortly before 3 p.m. Wednesday when, she told authorities, the body floated up toward the surface of the water, then sank back down, out of view. The hiker returned to the lake and directed a sheriff’s deputy to the location of the sighting, according to a Sheriff’s Department news release.

A CALSTAR helicopter was requested to respond to the lake to search the surface and shoreline, but no evidence of the body was found. Sheriff’s Department search and rescue volunteers also searched the water and shoreline with the same results.

At 9:30 a.m. Thursday, members of the sheriff’s dive team arrived at the lake, where the waters were calm and glassy. With the assistance of the CALSTAR helicopter, the team searched the lake, but the only floating object found was a piece of wood.

The dive team also conducted an underwater search of the area where the floating body had been seen. Although they did not find a body, they reported signs of beaver activity in the search area.

Sheriff’s officials said they have no recent reports of anyone missing or lost in the vicinity of Cascade Lake.
