Strands from the main suspension cable enter a Bay Bridge chamber, where each is connected to a socket, on the right. The main cable separates into 137 strands, and their connection to the sockets is critical to the bridge’s safety. Rust encrusted the cable strands at the junctions of dozens of sockets, and crack-like indentations are apparent in a few cases, a Sacramento Bee investigation found.
