The top-ranked Cal women’s rowing team won its fourth Lake Natoma Invitational title on Sunday, co-host Sacramento State reported.
Trailing the Bears – who also won in 2009, 2010 and 2012 – in the two-day, nine-team regatta were, in order, No. 6 Brown, No. 7 Stanford, No. 4 USC, No. 9 Notre Dame, No. 20 San Diego, Oklahoma, Kansas and Sac State.
Cal placed first in the varsity eight, novice eight and second varsity four finals. The Bears finished second in the second varsity eight and varsity four finals.
UCD leads Big West golf
No. 37 UC Davis, seeking a fifth straight Big West Conference women’s golf championship, took a 10-stroke lead after the first round in San Luis Obispo, UCD reported.
The Aggies’ Beverly Vatananugulkit fired a 1-under-par 72 for a one-shot advantage.
• Sophomore Tanner Bily hit his first career home run, a three-run shot, in UC Davis’ seven-run third inning as the host Aggies (16-16, 3-6 Big West Conference) rolled to an 8-4 victory over Long Beach State (16-18, 3-3) in baseball, according to UCD. Nick Lynch and Adam Young each had three of the Aggies’ 14 hits.
• Rhys Hoskins (Jesuit High School) hit his Western Athletic Conference-leading sixth home run of the season in the first inning, but the Sac State baseball team (21-14, 10-2) suffered an 8-6 loss to Grand Canyon (18-5, 8-4) in Phoenix, Sac State reported. The Hornets led 3-0 and 5-3, and had the tying run on base in the ninth.
• Sierra Hyland of host Cal Poly (22-16, 4-5 Big West) threw a three-hitter in a 3-0 victory over UC Davis (14-25, 3-6) in softball, UCD reported.
• Sai Kartik Nakireddi beat Roy Brandys 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, leading the host Fresno State men to a 5-0 win over Sac State (9-14), according to the Hornets’ website.
