Ask Sacto 911 crime Q&A: What happened to speeding drivers responsible for fatal 1996 crash in Rosemont area?

In 1995 or 1996, a friend of mine was killed in a crash on Kiefer and South Watt. Two men were arrested for chasing them and causing the accident. What ever happened to them? Are they still in prison?

Alfred Anthony Garcia and Michael Lee Childress were convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for the deaths of three people in October 1996 as the two engaged in a high-speed chase.

According to stories in The Bee, Garcia, of Susanville, and Childress, of the Rosemont area, were involved in an altercation at a Rosemont-area party the night of the crash. When Childress fled in his car, Garcia reportedly pursued him at speeds of 70 to 90 mph.

Childress was driving a Chevrolet El Camino that ran a red light on Kiefer Boulevard at South Watt Avenue and struck a Thunderbird. The impact killed Mavalia Lopez, 19, of Sacramento, a passenger in Childress’ car, and the occupants of the Thunderbird, Lucinda Bartlett, 29, of Carmichael, and Corey Cave, 33, of Roseville. Childress suffered a broken leg in the crash.

Garcia also ran the red light, but he was able to steer around the collision. His car spun out of control and came to rest on a shoulder. He sped off but was arrested a short distance away.

Both men are 36 years old and still incarcerated. Garcia is at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison in Corcoran, and Childress is at Folsom State Prison.
