Ask Sacto 911 crime Q&A: Any information on aftermath of fatal crash on Watt Avenue off ramp?

Published: Monday, Apr. 21, 2014 - 5:39 pm

What was the result of the accident that caused a woman’s death in January 2014 at the new Watt Avenue off ramp on Highway 50 east? Was there one death? Did others have injuries?

– Marie, Sacramento

A collision matching the one described claimed the life of 35-year-old Christine Shimosaka of Sacramento on Sept. 1, 2013.

According to a story in The Bee, about 1:50 a.m., Shimosaka was riding in the back seat of a car that was traveling eastbound on the Watt Avenue off ramp about 40 mph when her vehicle was rear-ended by a sport utility vehicle. CHP officials said the SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed.

The car Shimosaka was in traveled into the cloverleaf area and rolled. The SUV, driven by Ryan Hoppe, 29, of Sacramento, hit a highway barrier and rolled onto its side, ejecting Hoppe.

Shimosaka suffered fatal injuries, and three other people in the vehicle she was in were transported to the hospital with injuries.

Hoppe was transported to the hospital and later arrested on charges including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury or death. He is being held at Sacramento County’s Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center. His next court date is April 28.
