The median asking price of small- and medium-size businesses for sale in the Sacramento area during in this year’s first quarter was $225,000, according to San Francisco-based BizBuySell.com.

That was up sharply from $199,000 in last year’s fourth quarter, and it matched the median of $225,000 reported in the initial quarter of 2013.

First-quarter calculations were based on 184 Sacramento-area businesses listed at BizBuySell.com. The Sacramento statistics are based on listing data, not on actual completed business sales.

Listed businesses in the area had median revenue of $382,285 in this year’s opening quarter, up slightly from $380,500 in the year-ago period. The latest total was up significantly from median revenue of $359,424 in last year’s fourth quarter.

Nationally, BizBuySell reported robust transaction activity among small- and medium-size businesses, with a median first quarter asking price of sold businesses at $199,000.

“While expected, it’s encouraging that the 2014 business-for-sale market is starting the year strong,” said Curtis Kroeker, group general manager of BizBuySell.com and BizQuest.com. “It shows that, despite 2013’s surge in business sales, we haven't yet worked through the pent-up supply and demand created during the Great Recession.”
