Re "California mulls wolf listing amid hunts elsewhere" (Business, April 16): I am so disappointed with The Bee for publishing this article. The reporter clearly didn't make any journalistic inquiries before misinforming his readers about the current status of gray wolves.
By combining the rebounding population and the lifting of federal protections in one sentence, he is implying that wolves have rebounded and federal protections were lifted as a result. Nothing could be further from the truth. Federal protections were lifted by a congressional budget rider which had nothing to do with the health of wolf populations.
The reporter goes on to say an increase in livestock killing and big-game herd reductions are a result of the resurgent wolf population. There is nothing in the scientific literature to support that conclusion.
