A long-held desire for professional soccer to grace a Sacramento field will be fulfilled Saturday when Sacramento Republic FC hosts its first USL Pro home match.

As Sac Republic awaits completion of Bonney Field, the 8,000-seat stadium being built at Cal Expo, where its first game is scheduled for June 7, the team and fans will get to know each other in Hughes Stadium’s venerable old confines.

Not only is Hughes expected to be a raucous place with the likes of the Tower Bridge Battalion doing its soccer-style cheering thing in full throat, trusted estimates project fans gathered to see the match with the visiting Harrisburg City Islanders will set a league attendance record. Team officials say they expect between 15,000 and 20,000 fans to fill Hughes Stadium, which has a capacity of 20,311.

It will be the sixth match of the season for Sac Republic, which has two victories, two losses and one tie. The team has scored nine goals while allowing six. Defender Micky Daly and forward Justin Braun have each scored two goals. Goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek has the team’s lone shutout, a 3-0 victory over LA Galaxy II on April 13.

Fans could be rooting in style, taking advantage of “Song of the Republic,” a guitar anthem written for Sac Republic by Steve Ross, front man for Sacramento punk band City of Vain.

Tickets remain available for Saturday’s match as well as for two subsequent matches at Hughes Stadium: May 3 against Orange County Blue FC and May 17 against LA Galaxy II.
