Traffic backs up along the eastbound Highway 50 corridor on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 in Sacramento, Calif. while construction crews work on the W-X freeway as part of the Fix50 project which will have lane closures in the east and westbound directions. (This is the interchange of Interstate 5, 80 and Highway 50).

Fix50 commute gets off to smooth start

Published: Friday, Apr. 25, 2014 - 7:14 am

The morning commute is getting off to a good start, with streets largely clear of traffic as Fix50 enters its first Friday.

Traffic, however, is still slow on eastbound Highway 50, near the construction zone.

Dennis Keaton, a spokesman for the Department of Transportation, said he expects traffic “to be a lot better today,” owing to the light commute travelers typical of Fridays. But the rain could hamper construction work.

“It’s starting to sprinkle right now,” said Keaton, speaking from the construction zone. “The rain could have little or no effect, depending on how heavy it gets. If the rain becomes hazardous for both drivers and workers, we’ll suspend operations.”
