Work will begin Monday on a project to improve the Fallen Leaf Lake trail system in South Lake Tahoe.

The three- to five-year project is designed to improve access to popular destinations and reduce congestion and user conflicts, according to a news release from the U.S. Forest Service’s Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.

During the first phase this spring and summer, a new bike path from Fallen Leaf Campground to the Pope Baldwin Bike Path will be constructed, several trails on the north end of Fallen Leaf Lake will receive maintenance, and other trails will be rerouted. Temporary closures or restrictions in access may occur during the work and some noise and visual impacts may affect the campground and surrounding areas.

Future work will include rerouting portions of the Mt. Tallac Trail, constructing new trailheads and parking areas in several locations along Highway 89 between Camp Richardson and Spring Creek Road, and moving the last one-quarter mile of the Pope Baldwin Bike Path to a more appropriate access point on Highway 89.

Depending on funding, future work also may include a new trail connecting the Pope Baldwin Bike Path from the Spring Creek Road area to Fallen Leaf Lake, a new trail connecting the Fallen Leaf Campground area to Angora Ridge, and a new trail connecting Angora Ridge to the North Upper Truckee neighborhoods.

The work scheduled for this season is funded by the Forest Service Legacy Trails Capital Maintenance and Improvement Fund.
