One man is dead and another injured after a midair collision between two parachutists Tuesday afternoon in Acampo in San Joaquin County.

San Joaquin County sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Les Garcia said deputies responded about 1:30 p.m. to a report of an accident involving two parachutists from the Parachute Center in Acampo. A midair collision was reported between two male parachutists, one of whom had landed in the 23500 block of North Highway 99 in Acampo.

Deputies found a man with injuries, possibly a broken leg, Garcia said, but the other parachutist was reported missing. The second man was found a short time later in the 4300 block of East Collier Road. Garcia said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Garcia said no information was immediately available on how the collision occurred. He said the accident investigation has been turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The Sheriff’s Department will handle the coroner’s investigation. Garcia said the name of the man who died is not being released pending notification of family.
