Man accused of pouring boiling water on victim convicted in domestic violence case

Published: Tuesday, Apr. 29, 2014 - 5:56 pm

A man accused of pouring boiling water over a woman’s head was convicted today by a Sacramento County jury of aggravated mayhem, torture and a domestic violence assault charge.

The jury also found true that Sofronski Brookins, 31, personally inflicted bodily injury and that he had a prior conviction for domestic violence, according to a Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office news release.

On Aug. 17, 2012, Brookins became angry with the victim. He boiled a pot of water and held the woman against a wall while he poured the water over her head, causing second-degree burns over 17 percent of her body and resulting in significant scarring, authorities said.

Brookins is to be sentenced May 30 before Sacramento Superior Court Judge Cheryl Chun Meegan.
