Re Highway repairs speed along (Page A1, May 1): Hooray for C.C. Myers' and CalTrans' commitment to expediently handling the Fix50 project, as long as we don't end up with bills down the road.

I have zero reason to think their hustle means they're cutting corners. I'm merely saying I hope that's not part of their formula. I worked road construction during college and saw a few subtle and not-so-subtle violations. Getting the job done expediently and making it look good were prioritized.

That was years ago, and a different construction company. Millions of taxpayers and/or drivers are counting on this project providing a reliable, professionally-done freeway project which will allow for millions of uneventful driving miles.

I'd be happy with the job not being completed quite as early, as long as it means getting it done diligently and with the best technology and long-term reliability.
