Re "Real motive often hides in measures" (Dan Walters, April 27): Dan Walters' column contained a deceptive statement. He said when Democrats voted to change the two-thirds vote needed to pass a budget to a simple majority that their "real goal was to take minority Republicans out of the process...(and was) a power play."
A more accurate description of this change would be as follows: A minority of the legislature was able to thwart the will of the majority, a perversion of democratic principles. Changing to majority rule stopped ideologically motivated obstructionist Republicans from continuing this destructive practice.
