River Cats glance: Freiman, Taylor erupt in Cats’ victory

Published: Thursday, May. 1, 2014 - 11:06 pm

• Highlight: Nate Freiman and Michael Taylor drove in seven runs combined to propel the River Cats past the Tacoma Rainiers 11-7 on Thursday night at Raley Field. Freiman drove in four runs.

• Pitching ugly: River Cats starter Arnold Leon didn’t have his good stuff. He struggled through five innings, allowing 10 hits and three walks and tossing two wild pitches. Yet he left the game with a 7-4 lead and earned the win.

• Drought ends: Until Kent Matthes hit his first home run of the season with two outs in the second inning, the River Cats had not gone deep in 461/3 innings. Matthes later missed a homer by a foot to right-center field, and Freiman missed two homers by a foot each to left field.

• Great series: UC Davis product Ty Kelly went 7 for 14 with a double, two home runs, five RBIs, two walks and seven runs for the Rainiers in the four-game series.

• Alphabet stats: Entering Thursday’s game, Tyler Ladendorf led the River Cats with a .455 batting average on balls in play (BABIP). The league average is .323. While he lacks power with a .118 isolated power (ISO) rating, he gets on base more often than any River Cat with a weighted on-base average (wOBA) of .427.

• Today: River Cats RHP Marcus Walden (0-0, 4.50 ERA) vs. El Paso RHP Billy Buckner (1-0, 1.80), 6:05 p.m., Southwest University Park, El Paso, Texas.
