5 picks for Cinco de Mayo in Sacramento

Cinco de Mayo doesn’t officially land until Monday, but hey, why not stretch those celebrations? This year, Cinco de Mayo is a weekend-long fiesta for many popular Mexican restaurants. That also means you have extra opportunities to enjoy some south of the border fun - and then staying home Monday to avoid the tequila fueled masses.

Here are The Bee’s Top 5 picks for Cinco de Mayo:

* Zocalo (1801 Capitol Ave., Sacramento; 1182 Roseville Parkway, Roseville): If you’re idea is partying with as many people possible, Zocalo is your spot. The popular Mexican restaurant with locations midtown and in Brosville - er, Roseville - always draws the crowds with a high energy vibe on Cinco de Mayo. And they’ll be celebrating all weekend starting at 11 a.m. with live music and loads of food and drink specials.

* Florez Bar & Grill (5900 S. Land Park Dr., Sacramento): The locals in south Land Park know that Florez Bar & Grill whips up one the best Mexican breakfasts in town, and also hosts a “Tequila Tuesday” program that draws aficionados of this agave-based spirit. They’ll also be parting it up Cinco de Mayo style all weekend, with mariachis, Aztec dancers and tequila tastings.

* Lalo’s Restaurant (5063 24th St., Sacramento): And some of us just want to eat without getting crushed at the bar while trying to order a margarita. Might as well head to Lalo’s, which arguably ranks as the best Mexican restaurant in town for its molcajetes (pictured above), quesadillas with huitlacoche or squash blossom and tasty tacos al pastor.

* Tequila Museo Mayahuel (1200 K St., Sacramento): Tequila Museo Mayahuel has emerged as a local favorite for those craving Mexican food and drink with a fine dining touch. The tequila and cocktail list runs deep, which makes for a celebratory pairing for a weekend-long party. Dinorah & The Crosswinds will provide the live music soundtrack with sets at 9 p.m. Saturday and 6:30 p.m. Monday.

* Madre Cerveceria 2 at Mother (1023 K St., Sacramento): For those who prefer craft beer to tequila, the much acclaimed Mother will offer south of border styled fare with a variety of saison and farmhouse ales on Monday. These five beers are picked by Sacramento News & Review co-editor and resident beer enthusiast Nick Miller, and include such brewers as Belgium’s De La Senne and West Sacramento’s own Bike Dog Brewing Co. These $30 tickets will sell out, so reserve your seat here.
