Re "A nation divided, with liberty and justice for some" (Leonard Pitts, April 27): It doesn't take much for anyone to see why so many men of color are behind bars for minor offenses. It is the circumstances they were born into and raised.
There should be a punishment for anyone bringing a child into this world with no intention of raising, and this goes for both mothers and fathers. Either or both who receive payment via welfare should work for that check, whether it be cleaning streets or in a state-operated day care for those children like their own. There should be no free lunch.
These children are born with irresponsible parents and become just like them. Many children born to such parents have to feel inferior, a mother on welfare and a father in prison, if they even know who he is.
These children deserve a better upbringing.
