Re "Misdiagnosed bipolar: One girl's struggle to get the right treatment" (April 23): A person with a mental disorder should never be called, retarded. It is ridiculous a father would not want to be featured in an article about the improvement of his daughter's health.

Destigmatizing mental illness cannot come fast enough. Society needs to stop looking down on people with mental illness and take a more understanding approach to abnormalities, especially if the cause is organic.

It is disgusting how people are quick to label others exhibiting abnormal behaviors and sentencing them to locked facilities. I intern at a county behavioral health facility and see people with a mental disorder being treated with a cocktail of medications to see if it works. Some clients are on the highest dosage of anti-psychotic medication and still report psychotic symptoms.

Funding research will assist providers in proper treatment, and help destigmatize mental illness. Please donate today.
