Eastbound traffic is redirected to the three inside lanes of eastbound Highway 50 on the first day of Phase II of the Fix50 project.

Caltrans to close more Fix50 lanes tonight

Published: Tuesday, May. 6, 2014 - 4:49 pm

Caltrans will close two westbound lanes of Highway 50 tonight downtown, as well as the 16th Street off-ramp and the connector ramp that takes traffic from Business 80 in midtown onto westbound 50.

The last-minute closures, announced late in the day Tuesday, will allow the Fix50 contractor to do prepwork on the westbound side of the freeway prior to planned major day and night closures on that side starting May 27.

Several eastbound lanes, on-ramps and connector ramps remain closed as well as crews repave that side of the freeway.

Tonight’s closures on the westbound lanes will start at 8 p.m. and run until 5 a.m. The connector ramp from Business 80 will be closed from midnight to 5 a.m.

Caltrans spokesman Dennis Keaton said vehicles from Business 80 who want to head westbound on 50 should head eastbound instead, and make a U-turn at Hornet Drive, on the Howe Avenue off-ramp near Sacramento State.

Keaton said the contractor, Myers and Sons, already has been briefly closing some westbound lanes at night for prepwork, then reopening lanes before the morning commute. Tonight’s closures, however, will affect more traffic because they include the 16th Street off-ramp and the Business 80 connector ramp.
