The California Highway Patrol is investigating the death of pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle while walking across traffic lanes on the Capital City Freeway.

About 9:29 p.m. Tuesday, Desmond Wake, 51, was walking on southbound Capital City Freeway south of Watt Avenue, crossing all traffic lanes in an easterly direction, according to a CHP news release.

A 44-year-old man driving a 2006 Toyota Corolla southbound on the freeway in the fast lane was unable to stop in time to avoid striking Wake, officials said. Wake was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 28-year-old man who was a passenger in the front seat of the Toyota sustained minor injuries but did not require medical aid at the time, according to the CHP. The driver of the Toyota was not injured.

CHP officials said it has not been determined whether Wake was under the influence of alcohol or drugs pending a toxicology report.
