Nevada search for missing Amador County man scaled back

Published: Friday, May. 9, 2014 - 8:00 pm

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office announced today that it is scaling back its search for a missing Amador County man whose car was found stuck in a creek bed last weekend.

A blue Honda Civic belonging to 79-year-old Warren Alford Hagyard of Pioneer was found Saturday by a man four-wheeling in the area Pyramid Lake near Nixon, Nev. The man reported that while on a very rough dirt trail about 10 miles from the trail head, he found a blue Honda Civic in a creek bed and said it appeared to be stuck on rocks. No one was in the vehicle. The windows were rolled down and the car keys were on the seat.

When the man researched the vehicle Monday morning on the Internet, he discovered that it was associated with Hagyard and contacted Amador County sheriff’s officials who, in turn contacted the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.

Hagyard was reported missing April 21. His wife told Amador County sheriff’s officials that family members last saw him leaving his son’s residence in Elk Grove about 3 p.m. that day. A “Silver Alert” was activated due to Hagyard’s medical conditions.

Placer County sheriff’s officials found that Hagyard’s credit card was used about 11 p.m. April 21 at a gas station in Colfax. Surveillance video from the gas station showed a man matching the description of Hagyard fueling a blue Honda. A clerk at the station who assisted the man said he appeared somewhat confused but did not ask for any assistance.

Since Monday morning, 40 to 45 personnel from Washoe County and a number of other northern Nevada law enforcement agencies have searched a 400-square-mile area of remote rugged terrain, but have not found Hagyard. At this point, search supervisors have decided to “step back” from the active search to review strategies for the continuing effort, according to a Washoe County Sheriff’s Office news release.
