Participants in a timed 5K race take off at the start of the 2013 running of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The 18th annual event will be run today at Cal Expo.

Race for the Cure

What: Thousands of people are expected to take part in the 18th annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure at Cal Expo. This year, an added competitive 10K run will take place. Round Up for the Cure is the theme of this year’s annual breast cancer awareness and fundraising event.

Where: 1600 Exposition Blvd., Sacramento.

When: Parking lot opens at 6:30 a.m.; registration begins at 7 a.m.; 10K run begins at 8:40 a.m.; 5K run begins at 9 a.m.; 5K walk begins at 9:05 a.m.; 1-mile run/walk begins at 9:15 a.m.; Little Roadrunners begins at 10 a.m.

Cost: $20 to $55; free for children 5 and younger.

Tractors a highlight

What: The 20th annual Farm and Tractor Days will feature restored vintage tractors and antique engines in Rio Linda. The Rio Linda-Elverta Historical Society Event will also offer hayrides, a swap meet, live demonstrations, draft horses and mule teams. Visitors can also tour the Dry Creek Ranch House and Museum.

Where: 6852 Dry Creek Road, Rio Linda.

When:a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.

Cost: $3 donation per car.

Geraniums at center

What: At the Sacramento Geranium Club Show and Sale, members will display their homegrown flowers and conduct short workshops on their care at Sacramento’s Shepard Garden and Art Center. The flower sale will offer a variety of geraniums.

All aboard

What: On National Train Day, the California State Railroad Museum will showcase an array of locomotives and offer a variety of hands-on activities and educational booths. Also planned is the city of Sacramento’s presentation about the rehabilitation of the 1926 Valley Station building.

When: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Cost: Museum admission: Adults, $10; youths age 6 to 17, $5; children 5 and younger, free.

‘Meet the Machines’

What: Children can touch, climb on and explore a range of machines and vehicles at the Cordova Recreation and Park District’s “Meet the Machines” event at the Mather Sports Center. Machines open for inspection include a firetruck, a Sacramento Municipal Utility District truck, a helicopter, a tow truck and a Segway.

When: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Cost: Admission is free.
