Published: Monday, May. 12, 2014 - 5:07 pm

Davis police are warning of an Internet scam reported in the community that involved a demand for restitution payments.

Victims receive an email from a sender who purports to be from the New York State Attorney’s Office in Amenia, N.Y. and demands restitution payments, according to a Police Department news release. In an email attachment is what appears to be an arrest warrant for the recipient sent by “Todd Jefferson.”

Davis police contacted the sheriff’s office in Amenia and verified that this in an ongoing Internet scam and that there is no State Attorney’s Office in that town.

Police urge anyone who received a similar email to call the New York State Attorney’s Office at (800) 771-7755, or email the office .

People who received such an email and complied with the demand for money are advised to contact their local law enforcement agency.
