Re "Rams select openly gay player" (Sports, May 11): I was amazed when I read this article -- amazed that this was the first year an openly gay player was drafted into the NFL.
Whether you support same-sex couples or not, I don't understand how sexuality has any correlation to the performance of a player on the field. If it is their reputation that NFL teams are worried about, I don't think drafting a gay player is choosing to support a political issue, but rather choosing to support equality. I find it sad that a great athlete can be disregarded simply because of who he/she chooses to love. A good athlete is a good athlete no matter their gender, sexual orientation, race, age, or religion.
