Re "Why is our state trying to add jails?" (Forum, Viewpoints, May 11): I agree with Emily Harris and Isaac Lev Szmonko. We shouldn't have to pay $500 million of taxpayers' money to building new jails when we don't need them. Instead, we should try solving the problem, which is to fix the overpopulation of prisons.
If law enforcement is not able to keep that area in check, then we should instead put money into law enforcement to help them enforce the law. We also should find another solution to put people in custody because prison shouldn't be the only option.
The government should instead be putting that money into better programs such as health care or programs that would help criminals from being put back into jail. That way, we won't be wasting money and space for new prisons.
