Ask Sacto 911 crime Q&A: What happened to child born to couple convicted in 1961 murder?

Published: Tuesday, May. 13, 2014 - 9:48 pm

In January 1961, on the Altamont Pass, my CHP partner and I arrested Richard A. Lindsey and his wife, Dixie Elaine Lindsey, for the kidnapping, rape and brutal slaying of little 6-year-old Rose Marie Riddle of Bakersfield. Richard was executed. His wife was sent to prison. My question is, what happened to her and her baby, which would have been born in prison?

Dixie Elaine Lindsey was 23 and pregnant with her fourth child when she and her husband abducted 6-year-old Rose Marie Riddle from a farm labor camp in Shafter in Kern County on Jan. 12, 1961.

According to an Associated Press story, Dixie Elaine Lindsey was sentenced to two life terms in prison for bludgeoning the girl with a tire iron after her husband raped and choked the youngster. The couple then dumped the girl’s body and drove to San Francisco. Three days after committing the crime, they were captured as they slept in their blood-stained car.

On March 22, 1961, Dixie Lindsey was moved from jail to a hospital, where she gave birth to a 6-pound, 2-ounce boy, according to the AP story. The baby was later placed in the custody of Dixie Lindsey’s mother.

Richard Arlen Lindsey, 30, was executed in November 1961 at San Quentin State Prison.

Dixie Elaine Lindsey’s name does not appear in the online roster of current California prison inmates.
