Awareness is essential to prevent Lyme disease

Re "Shared struggle creates a bond" (Our Region, May 11): Big thanks to The Bee for the excellent article on late-stage/chronic Lyme disease. As a late-stage Lyme patient (undiagnosed for 10 years) and Lyme support group leader, I am grateful for the accurate coverage that raises awareness of this growing, widely under-diagnosed illness.

As the article says, we patients are indeed deeply frustrated at the public and health sector's lack of awareness. Lyme ignorance on the part of most doctors is common and disturbing, with many cases missed, due not only to Lyme mimicking many other conditions, but also due to the poor conventional tests and medical ignorance of common Lyme symptoms.
