Re "Hold the line" (Page A1, May 14): Gov. Brown urges restraint in new spending of budget surplus. That will never happen. The Democrats will spend every penny of it and more. After all, that's what they always do.
I have a request. Before they spend one penny on new programs they should open and man all fire stations, hire all law enforcement people, open all state parks and take what's left and put toward the various state retirement programs. The taxpayer is going to get stuck with that retirement bill at some point, so let's lessen the tax increase if possible.
This so-called recovery is very weak, and we will probably be back in recession before long so pay it down what you can.
