Update: Coroner identifies victim in fatal Auburn Boulevard shooting

A young man succumbed to gunshot wounds late Sunday after being dropped off at a hospital by another person earlier in the day.

The man was identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as Anthony M. Johnson, 28, of Sacramento. He apparently was shot in the vicinity of the 5500 block of Auburn Boulevard, near Madison Avenue and Interstate 80. Deputies were called to that location about 11:15 a.m. Sunday for a report of a shooting.

However, after deputies arrived, they were told that although a man had been shot, he had been taken in a private vehicle to the hospital. The driver was described as a white man in a late 1990s Dodge 4-door compact car.

Deputies drove to the hospital where the gunshot victim, a 28-year-old man, was receiving treatment. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office confirmed that the man died of his wounds Sunday night.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Sgt. Lisa Bowman said Monday that Johnson and the suspect worked together, but little was known about the circumstances of the shooting. Several people accompanied Johnson to the hospital, she said.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the sheriff’s department at (916) 874-5115.
