Ask Sacto 911 crime Q&A: Any arrests in 1990s slaying of Citrus Heights coin shop owner?

Published: Monday, May. 19, 2014 - 6:00 pm

About 15 years ago a woman owned a coin/pawn business on Greenback near San Juan High School in Citrus Heights. She was found one day murdered in her shop with a gunshot to the head. Were there ever any leads in this case, or was anyone ever arrested for the crime?

Jo Cole, owner Western Gold, a coin and jewelry exchange at 7505 Greenback Lane, was killed in October 1994.

According to stories in The Bee, Cole, 52, was found slumped behind the counter of the store shortly after 5 p.m. with a gunshot wound to the head. No arrests were reported in the case.

Sacramento County sheriff’s officials said at the time that the shooting likely occurred during a robbery. They cited evidence that items and possibly money were taken from the store.

Sheriff’s officials said Cole always carried a gun on her hip and it was still holstered. That, along with an electronic door that was activated by the clerk, led investigators to believe that she was shot by someone who had gained her confidence or someone she knew.
